KAREN KEATING BIO




Color.jpgLocal fine art photographer and educator, Karen is president of Photoworks at Glen Echo Park and is the photo studio teacher at The Field School, Washington, D.C.

Keating has an MFA in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art and has studied at the Corcoran School of Art, Maine Photographic Workshops and the Santa Fe Workshops with Joe Cameron, Keith Carter, Arno Minkinnen, Debbie Fleming Caffrey, Eugene Richards, and Ernesto Bazan.

Keating is an emeritus member of Multiple Exposure Gallery, Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia.

Awards include: 2010 Center's Excellence in Teaching Award, Santa Fe, NM, Best in Show Ellipse Arts Center, Fairfax, VA, 2001, Runner-up Artist of the Year, Torpedo Factory, 2001, Teacher Recognition Award from Tufts University, 1998.

Keating published her photography book, "Cubans –Watching and Waiting" from four trips to Cuba, 2000-2003.  Street shooting and portraits of every day encounters with people in Havana and Vinales, a rural tobacoo growing area, are the focused content.

Recent work focuses on the ordinary moments of living, the beauty of the unremarkable, and the solitude found in every day events. The images are quiet moments capturing light and shadow hoping that the viewer might bring his or her own meaning to the content.
